The 2024 NZ Tax Roadshow will provide you with an update on key changes in tax policy, legislation and tax administration. Hear about the latest tax changes enacted and proposals in the pipeline. The workshop will help you navigate the detail using practical examples and scenarios.
Key updates include:
- Tax policy overview for year – setting scene for what is to come + reference repeal of the Tax Principles Reporting Act, International tax update – brief OECD 2 Pillars + Digital Services Tax.
- Bright-line property changes with examples – relevant 2-year bright-line test/main home exclusion and tax calculation if sold within bright-line period/refresh of key concepts.
- Unwind of interest limitation rules – timing and what it applies to (phase out of denied interest deductions), with summary chart and examples.
- Repeal of commercial building depreciation (2011 revisited! Deferred tax, importance of commercial building fit out – ongoing depreciation).
- Trustee tax rate increase, exclusions, with discussion and examples (plus IR comment/guidance re restructuring).
- Trust disclosure changes, likely additional changes to forms/disclosure requirements and expected timeframes (Primary legislation remedials and system/programming constraints).
- Adverse events measures(to extent any updates required including for fixed asset depreciation rollover relief).
- Donated trading Stock permanent measure.
- GST key changes/practical issues + update managed funds.

John Cuthbertson (FCA), New Zealand Tax & Financial Services Leader
John has a background in corporate tax and joined us from PwC in 2017. When property related questions come up, John is our expert. As our NZ Tax & Financial Services Leader John, manages our advocacy activities and consultative groups, and presents our submissions to Government and Select Committees.
Jolayne Trim (CA, LLB), Senior Tax Advocate
Jolayne has a strong interest in tax policy design and its impact for all New Zealanders. She builds and solidifies our strong relationship with Inland Revenue Policy and Strategy. As well as working on our policy and legislative submissions, Jolayne focuses on Financial Services member queries and submissions. Jolayne also has an interest in the tax and financial services implications of the treatment of cryptocurrencies.
Lindsay Ng (FCA), Senior Tax Advocate
Lindsay works in a range of areas, including tax policy, legislation and tax administration. She writes submissions to Government and Inland Revenue proposals covering most of the statements released by IR’s Tax Counsel Office and provides comment on draft rulings and standard practice statements. Lindsay leads CA ANZ’s advocacy activities on tax operational matters, working closely with our National Tax Liaison Group to identify, progress and resolve operational issues impacting members with Inland Revenue.
Teri Welham (FCA), Senior Tax Advocate
Teri specialises in the practical and is our in-house research guru. Prior to joining CA ANZ she led and managed the CCH Questions & Answers service. Teri has had practical experience in both public practice and corporate environments. She can tell you about anything to do with the calculation of tax and return filing for taxpayers big and not so big.
The tax team has many years of experience (over 120 years between them) and use this to put a practical spin on changes to tax laws or IR practice. During the roadshow the team will explain what’s changed – and why - and also seek feedback on how these changes are affecting you.
