As climate change becomes one of humanity’s “greatest crisis” now more than ever, our start-ups ecosystem and business in general, needs to think of innovative ways to make sure that sustainability is at the forefront of their business models. 

This panel of start-up leaders will share their stories of how an idea lead to a start-up, its journey, triumphs and lessons, as well as what the business and accounting profession can do to be #differencemakers working toward a more sustainable future.

Steve Cooper, CFO & COO, EMROD
Steve Cooper, CFO/COO - Steve is an experienced executive with a 25-year international career spanning multiple industries including deep tech, property, IT, logistics, FMCG, media, telecommunications & manufacturing. Steve has built an extensive career as a financial leader holding senior CFO, CRO and director roles in large multinational and publicly listed companies (including Kiwi Property, Kotahi Logistics, DB Breweries/Heineken, Stockland, Vodafone) as well as active advisor, director and chairman positions in smaller emerging tech start-ups. His diverse career has spanned New Zealand, London, Stockholm, and taken him to Australia to complete an MBA. Steve holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) Degree, is a Chartered Accountant and completed an MBA at the Australian Graduate School of Management (University of NSW). 

Claudia Grave, Co-Founder, Hitch 
Claudia is currently the Co-Founder of Hitch, a company helping businesses drive their carbon emissions towards zero through tools to measure, report and reduce commuting emissions. With clients among The Co-Operative Bank and Sharesies, Hitch has been featured on RNZ's CheckPoint, Stuff, The New Zealand Herald and has won multiple awards for their mahi. Prior to Hitch, Claudia played a key role in kick-starting PwC's Digital Health practice, and helped set up the COVID-19 border testing data and reporting programme. She also supported the ACC client transformation, NZ's second largest business transformation, managed a subsidiary of a global education company aiming to completely disrupt the way people access education and played a key role in a marketing strategy to raise pest control awareness and get 1 in 5 residential properties in Otago to have a trap. in her spare time, Claudia walks or bikes the amazing trails Wellington. She also recently launched a project raising funds for the people in Ukraine, Thrift for Good, where 100% of the profits go towards the Red Cross's efforts in Ukraine.  

Craig Tuhoro, Owner/Managing Director,Global Metal Solutions
Craig is a passionate business owner; with over 30 years in the scrap metal industry, who is currently the Owner/MD of Global Metal Solutions (GMS). GMS is investing heavily in ensuring that they have the ability to continue to strive towards maximising recyclable and re-suable commodities with the ultimate aim of reducing output to landfills. GMS' idea of maximizing alternate uses of un-processable waste would lead to the idea of NZ's first waste-to-energy plant in Te Awamutu. When not at work, Craig looks after his 5 children and 5 grandchildren, and enjoys weightlifting, boxing and rugby.
