Are you really as objective as you think you are? The answer is probably not. Cognitive biases are hardwired into our brains, and affect professional judgements without our knowledge. History is littered with examples of poor decision-making by professional accountants resulting in sub-optimal decisions, ethical breaches and accounting scandals. Often these missteps occurred because objectivity was clouded by biases such as “groupthink”, “overconfidence” or “selective perception”.

The good news is that we can address this issue. By making unconscious biases conscious, applying ethical decision-making frameworks and implementing processes and controls in our organisations we can reset our decision-making to be more objective.
